Melissa Drake. Language Arts Lead.
Why did you join 10X Academy?
I joined 10X because I was excited about being part of a team that wants to be part of the solution in transforming and improving education. With ten years of experience teaching in the public education system, I thought it would be a great opportunity to build a school from the ground up that will serve the community and prepare students for the real world.
How were you called to serve at 10X?
I left the classroom in 2019 and considered leaving education altogether. My heart wasn’t in it. Immediately after, I saw what the pandemic was doing to students on both academic and emotional levels. I became even more hesitant to return. I always knew I belonged in education, but I wasn’t sure in what way I was ready or willing to serve. When I saw this opportunity to help create and open 10X Academy, I knew it was God telling me that I am not finished in a profession that I love.
What’s your background in education?
I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies, taught high school English for ten years, and earned my Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis on teaching and learning. I love teaching literature, watching my students interact in discussion, and watch their minds grow as they think, write, and speak critically. I also love being involved in student activities which is why I was class advisor and the Activities Director for several years. Lastly, I taught in the welding pathway which opened my eyes to the need for trade pathways and opportunities for students.
Something personal.
I love being an Auntie to my two nieces who I often visit in Colorado. I have a dog who is full of energy, a family I like to visit in Orange County as often as I can, and great friends who enrich my life on so many levels. I am a sports fanatic. I love the Pittsburgh Steelers, watching and following professional sports, and playing indoor soccer.
